Abstract:

This article is a brief selection based on a dissertation titled “The Reception of Eugen Wüster’s Work and the Development of Terminology” written by the Canadian scholar Angela Campo. Meanwhile, the author also adds some new developments in the terminology field. In the history of terminology, Eugen Wooster’s work, has been an important inspiration for terminology research studies. Wüster is recognized as an important figure in modern terminology, as a pioneer of Terminology. Since the early 1990s, with the rapid development of science/technology and related fields, new theoretical approaches to terminology, which seem strongly to hold a critical attitude towards Wooster’s work and caused a hot debate. These approaches have also identified new methods and applications for terminology. The “methodology of scientific research programs” advocated by Lakatos (1978), applied as an interpretive model, proved that terminology is now perceived as a research program. In Lakatos’ terms, terminology is becoming a stronger theoretical and descriptive discipline.

Key words: modern terminology, standardization, general theory of terminology, modern terminology, new terminology approaches, terminology as a scientific research program
