Abstract: A minor planet is an astronomical object in orbit around the Sun that is neither a planet nor exclusively classified as a comet. Chinese term xiaoxingxing (minor planet) has been used since the 19th century to describe these objects. The term was coined in Chinese by Alexander Wylie and Benjamin Hobson for their books Dili Cuoyao (Geography) and Bowu Xinbian (Natural history) in 1855. The word “xiaoxingxing” should be the Chinese translation of English word “minor planet”.
Key words: xiaoxingxing, xiaoyouxing, zhongxingxing, xiaohuoxing
