Origin of “qi’e”

Abstract:

Penguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Antarctica. Chinese term qi’e(penguin)has been used since the 1850s to describe these birds. The term was first introduced in publication in 1854 when qi’e appeared in a scientific monograph Shengwu Zonglun in Chinese Serial Xiaer Guanzhen.
