Abstract:
During that period of Westernization Movement, John Fryer, an English missionary had exerted important impacts on Chinese translation advancement and Chinese science development. He served in Kiangnan Arsenal, responsible for introducing western science knowledge and translating science texts. His technical translation was best known for his chemistry term translation, which could be characterized as creativity, stability and sustainability. Many factors had formed those three translation features, such as Chinese cultural tradition, western scientific criterion and Fryer’s liberal values. The integration of these chemistry terms into Chinese culture has raised the Chinese nation’s discourse awareness and promoted the construction of Chinese terminology system.
