Abstract:

This paper aims to resolve expression problems about different expressions of some terms in earth sciences, and proposes a standardized or proper expression. According to the current national and professional standards related to scholarly publishing, the author compared and analyzed many expressions (word compositions) of a term in publications and data base online, such as Common Standard Chinese Characters Table, data base of term-online, Modern Chinese Dictionary (7th edition), Dictionary of Earth Sciences. The author finds that in many different expressions of a term, some are habitual errors and must be disused, some are the old expression ways and should be substituted by a new way, and others have no problem in standardization and may be used in uniformity. The term expressions chosen in this paper can provide important references for the standardized use of terms in earth sciences publications, and may be helpful to the editing and publishing of the book Terms in Geology (2nd edition).
