Abstract:

The material from the core of the borehole obtained by drilling can refer to either consolidated rock, unconsolidated loose sediments or other forms of material, which is collectively referred to as core in English. Its corresponding Chinese term “yanxin” (岩芯) cannot cover all these material. According to the rules of Chinese word formation, it should be called as “kongxin” (孔芯). We suggest to translate the English term “core” in the drilling industry into “kongxin” (孔芯), so as to completely correspond with the English term “core”. We also suggest to revise the Chinese translation of the core-related terms in drilling engineering terms, and put forward 14 translation suggestions.
