Abstract:

The four-volume English and Chinese Dictionary with the Punti and Mandarin Pronunciation, compiled by German missionary Wilhelm Lobscheid, played a very important role in the history of English-Chinese lexicography. The dictionary, written on the basis of Lobscheid’s predecessors such as Robert Morrison, Samuel Wells Williams and Walter Henry Medhurst, exerted far-reaching influences upon English-Chinese dictionaries published in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and those early bilingual dictionaries published by the Commercial Press in particular. It has been widely recognized for wider coverage of the English vocabulary, abundant illustrative examples and better translations. And Lobscheid’s effort in including more technical terms and providing better translations is rather commendable. This paper attempts to offer an in-depth discussion on those technical terms included by Lobscheid from two angles, namely the distribution of terms across disciplines and their translation.
