Abstract:

In simultaneous interpreting, the difficulties of rendering traditional Chinese medicine terminologies into English differ from those in text translation. Under dual pressure of both time shortage and limited brain capacity, the interpreter must compress the SI rendering of traditional Chinese medicine terminologies so as to bridge communication. With audience acceptance taken into consideration, the interpreter may compress on both syllabic and lexical levels to shorten the English version. Meanwhile, the interpreter may optimize the SI rendering semantically by using pronouns and combining sentences, to achieve the primary goal of conveying the key message.
