Abstract:

Due to the different principles and methods of naming and translating scientific and technological terms adopted by mainland and Taiwan of China over the years, there are certain barriers to academic expressions and exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait in a purely Chinese context. One of the obvious manifestations is the difference in the translation of humanities proper names between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. The article analyzes the similarities and differences in the transliteration of specific terms between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait in disciplines of Humanities including toponymy, ethnology, and world history, and concludes that the formulation and implementation of uniform and standardized rules for the translation of foreign language proper names into Chinese is the basic solution to the problem of differences in the translation of humanities proper names across the Taiwan Strait.
