Abstract: This paper traces back to Yan Fu's experience in the Late Qing when he translated English words into Chinese. We think that due to the terms translated from Japanese were abundant in newspapers, journals, textbooks and dictionaries at that time, words coined by Yan Fu did not come into being. Based on the author's own translation practice, we analyze the reason why some translated terms may survive nowadays. Moreover, we think that the standardization of terminology depends on the joint efforts of all the departments concerned.

Key words: Yan Fu, translation, Japanese, single-parent family
