Traceability of “xiyi” and “zhongyi”

Abstract:

Western medicine is the science and practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Chinese term “xiyi”(Western medicine)is firstly recorded in Lin Zexu’s Huashi Yiyan in 1839. Traditional Chinese medicine is a style of traditional Asian medicine informed by modern medicine but built on a foundation of more than 2500 years of Chinese medical practice. The term “zhongyi”(Traditional Chinese medicine)used by Xu Shou’s Yixuelun in 1876.
