Abstract:

Since Chinese president Xi Jinping put forward the concept of “zhongguo meng ”(中国梦) in 2012, the academic community in China has had a heated debate on its English translation, especially its two versions of “Chinese Dream” and “China Dream”. As both have respective advantages and disadvantages, it seems meaningless to discuss their appropriateness without considering their specific contexts. As a matter of fact, the concept of “zhongguo meng” has had a long history. In modern China, it is used in at least two ways, as either a folk idiom or a political jargon. Making a difference in their translations might help to show the rich connotation of this concept and to promote Chinese political culture abroad.
