Thoughts on Standardization of Alphabetical Spelling of Road and Street Names in China

Abstract: After a comparative study of standardizations and documents of alphabetical spelling of road and street names in China, the author points out that some measures must be taken on the following five aspects: (1) prevent confusion about alphabetical spelling of generic terms in road and street names; (2) avoid problems caused by the translation approach to generic terms; (3) unify different ideas on English translation and Pinyin against the background of international and local thinking; (4) define duties of civil administration and quality supervision departments responsible for road and street names; (5) standardize capitalization of road and street names.
