Abstract: Affluenza is a portmanteau coined by blending affluence and influenza. As a neologism, it has several Chinese renditions with different connotations:“富恙”“富贵病”“富人病”“富裕病”“富裕流感”and“流行性物欲症”. A detailed comparative study in the paper discloses that “流行性物欲症” is the best translation among the above, and suggests that it should be simplified into “物欲症” to achieve idiomaticity and readability. The paper concludes that “物欲症” should be the official translation of affluenza from diachronic perspective, and for the sake of acceptance in the target language.

Key words: affluenza, translation, “物欲症”
