Abstract:

The term “diqiu”(earth)was first used in Chinese in the copy of Shanhai Yudi Quantu(world map), which was compiled by Matteo Ricci in 1600 and published in Feng Yingjing’s “Yueling Guangyi”(astronomy and meteorology)in 1602. In Wei Yuan’s “Haiguo Tuzhi” (world geography), which was published in 1844, “diqiu” was used in related section reproducing Ricci and Aleni’s texts on the globe. Wang Li wrongly considers “diqiu” as a neologism introduced by “Haiguo Tuzhi”.
