Abstract:

Ancient Chinese numismatic culture is colorful with a long history, and the naming of Chinese numismatic is profound and interesting. The paper elaborates the characteristics of Chinese numismatic terminology, summarizes four translation strategies of Chinese numismatic terminology, namely, “transliteration”, “transliteration plus literal translation”, “transliteration plus free translation”, “transliteration plus annotation”. This paper also puts forward some suggestions on the specific problems existing in transliteration methods which are inconsistent with the current basic rules of Chinese Pinyin orthography, single English translation strategies and confusion in English translation. We hope our suggestions could facilitate the standardization of the translation of Chinese numismatic terminology and promote the international dissemination of Chinese numismatic culture.
