Abstract:

This paper comparatively analyzes two newly developed theories:Cognitive Terminology and Sociocognitive Terminology. The analysis reveals notable similarities in their backgrounds, theoretical foundations, and perspectives on terminology. However, significant differences arise in their core research issues, content, and methodologies, which contribute to their distinct nomenclature.Cognitive Terminology takes Cognitive Linguistics as its basis to explore the cognition principles motivating the generation, use, and evolution of terms. It also highlights the cognitive, instrumental, and communicative functions of terms. In contrast,Sociocognitive Terminology focuses on the influence of social and cultural factors on the understanding of terminological concepts in real-world contexts, utilizing theories of Cognitive Linguistics to examine the relationships among varying interpretations of these terms. The findings of this research will enhance the understanding and application of both theories, thereby contributing to the advancement of terminology research and the systematization of the terminology discipline, and offering a certain reference for the building of China’s terminology discipline.
