Abstract:

Research articles abstracts (RAAs) play a pivotal role in condensing research findings and facilitating scholarly discourse.Based on a self-compiled corpus of novice academic abstracts from English learners, this study adopted Hyland’s (2000) five-move analytical framework to investigate major issues in abstract writing among Chinese EFL learners, represented by tertiary-level English learners from a northern Chinese institution. The findings revealed that while most participants demonstrated a basic mastery of the overall move structure, they exhibited recurring problems in move structures, with the major issues of the absence of obligatory moves, improper move sequence, and information redundancy. The study also identified difficulties in lexical verbs which realized the move functions, characterized by insufficient verb sophistication and inaccuracies in tense application. These findings underscore the pedagogical necessity of integrating genre-specific instruction into academic English curricula.
