Abstract:

The research on translation learners’ competence in translation teaching research is an unexplored area. Based on combination of translation competence and terminology translation theories, this study investigated the terminology translation competence of 153 undergraduates majoring in Spanish at four universities in China. The involved survey aimed to clarify the components of terminological competence in Spanish-Chinese bilateral translation practice among Spanish major undergraduates. Quantitative and qualitative analysis show that: (1) Instead to their remarkable terminology processing and recognition ability, the respondents exhibit low capability in using terminological tools and terminology management, which significantly influence the final translation quality;(2) Insufficient terminology processing often leads to more discourse errors in Spanish-Chinese translations; (3) lack of terminological knowledge and/or terminological sensitivity lead to terminological processing deficiency. Our results enlighten that in order to improve the quality of scientific and technical translation, instructors can strengthen the students’ terminological tools management, and also, should introduce more scientific and technical knowledge.
