Traceability of “xibao”

Abstract: The Chinese term xibao(cell)was firstly used in the text Zhiwuxue(Botany),prepared by Alexander Williamson and Li Shanlan, which was published in Shanghai in 1858.A facsimile edition of the work was published in Japan in 1867. xibao was first introduced in Japan through his work. According to Shen Guowei's opinion, UdagawaYoan(宇田川榕菴)used the saibo(細胞)in his work植学啟原(Shokugaku Keigen,1834)to refer to the utricle.
