The Term Chance and Translation of Null Hypothesis

Abstract:

According to the statistics of dictionaries and periodicals of CNKI, the English word “null hypothesis”can be translated into 18 kinds such as “Ling jiashuo(she)”,“Yuan jiashuo(she)”, “Wuxiao jiashuo(she)”and “Xuwu jiashuo(she)”,the Chinese translation name of null hypothesis is diverse and its usage is confused. In order to fully understand the connotation of the word and give a more appropriate translation name,this paper analyzes the rationality of various translated names and finds that it is more appropriate to translate the null hypothesis into “Ling jiashuo (she)”,based on the analysis of the application of the“ small probability event principle” in the test of null hypothesis,the research on the connotation and function of “no difference” and “no association”,the analysis of the meaning of “null” and “hypothesis” and the abbreviation “H0”.
