Abstract:

From the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory, metaphorical terms which are abound in aviation context are the presentation of cognitive mind at the linguistic level. Residing behind these terms are both internal systematicity within metaphorical mappings and external systematicity between metaphorical mappings. In the light of internal systematicity, the cognitive topological structure of some forms or characteristics of the source domain is preserved in the referent of the term. Be that as it may, highlighting coexists with hiding as a result of the heterogeneity of the two domains. In the light of external systematicity, metaphorical aviation terms are framed in hierarchical relationships, which can give rise to innovative terms originating from generic-level metaphors. When necessary, efforts can be made to extend or even break through metaphorical systematicity.
