Chinese Translations of Other Countries’ Names: Cultural Connotations,Word Choices and Changes in Translation

Abstract:

Names of countries originate from different nations and languages and carry diverse cultural connotations. Generally speaking, there is only one corresponding Chinese translation of a country’s name officially accepted and used by Chinese people.This paper makes explorations and analysis on different cultural connotations, principles of word choices, as well as the changes in Chinese translation of some countries’ names and the reasons behind.
