Upgrading of the English Translation of the Term “Law-based Governance” within the Theoretical Framework of “Political Equivalence”:A Case Study of Its Translations in the Reports of Five CPC National Congresses

Abstract:

“Law-based Governance” is a crucial political term in China. Its translation is significant in promoting China’s international discourse power. Based on studies on the English versions of this term in reports of five national congresses of the CPC ranging from the 15th to the latest 19th, the article works out a changing path in its translation. From theoretical framework of “Political Equivalence” covering the “political” “dynamic” and “balanced” perspective, we evaluate different translate versions to decide which one is the most appropriate one with equivalent political connotation with its Chinese version, analyze reasons behind the upgrading of the English translation, and figure out its enlightenment that could shed light on the translation of political terms with Chinese characteristics.
