目前transmission medium译为“传输媒质”(亦有用媒体)
storage medium译为“存储媒体”
communication media，mass media译为“传播媒介”，“大众媒介”
multimedia译为“多媒体”
现似有统一媒体的趋势。
三、message现用消息、电文、电函
1.在信息论中、信息源的输出为载荷信息的有序的符号的序列(an ordered series of characters intended to convey information)。
2.在数据通信中，定义为字符与符号的组合从一点传输到另一点(A combination of characters & symbols transmited from one point to another)，因而译为报文、电文，如message switching译为“电文交换”、“报文交换”。
3.在新业务中messaging service系指经存贮转发的电信业务，和寄信函相似，无确切译名(如电函业务)。message handling system后暂定为“消息处理系统”。
四、E－mail目前有译电子信函、电子信箱、电子邮件、电子邮政
查mail一词原义为“邮件”。但邮件有两类，一为“信函”、一为包裹，E－mail故以信函为宜，将来邮政方面为何电子化，恐会有新的概念，业务与产品。
五、transfer与transmission
transmission译为“传输”，propagation译为“传播”，已无异义，后出现transfer(如ATM，STM)有译“传递”、“传送”、“转移”，在电信中似以“传递”稍宜。
transmission与transfer之区别似在“传输”(transmission)不计到达何处，“传递”(transfer)则明确到达目的地。
transmission－The sending of data from one place for reception elsewhere.
transfer－To send data from one place to receive the data at another place.
data transfer－The result of the transmission of data signals from any data source to a data sink.
transfer译为“转移”，是不错的，但在通信中，似以“传递”为宜。
六、channel，path，circuit，line
channel在信息论中译为“信道”、“通信”，计算机中有时为“通路”、“话路”(voice channel)，“报路”(telegraph channel)，数据中data channel则译为“数据信道”(当时即不统一)。
path在无线中译为“路径”，有线中为“通道”。
随着发展，transmission media又称为transmission path内含若干virtual path，而virtual path又含若干virtual channel，因此译名须进一步系列化。
查通道与通路很难区分大小，因此须要确定。

virtual path 虚路径 虚通道
virtual channel 虚道路 虚道路
另外circuit与line一般不会混用，但有时亦须加以区别。
circuit电路是双向两条道路(channel)组成，line为线路。但有时把circuit switching称为线路交换——不妥。
七、多媒体及B－ISDN中出现许多新译名，值得在明年集中研究
