Abstract:

Volleyball terminology, while bearing the most eastern styles, frequently encounters semantic non-equivalence in Chinese-English translation. The sport’s growing professionalization has intensified international transfers of athletes to China, with English serving as the lingua franca for communication. However, discrepancies in terminology nomenclature often lead to mistranslation. This study employs Hall’s high-and low-context communication theory as an analytical lens, coupled with Venuti’s domestication theory,to deconstruct the cultural logics underlying divergent naming conventions between Chinese and American English volleyball terminologies.

Key words: volleyball terminology, cross-cultural communication, domestication, high-and low-context theory
