On Translating Names of Colleges and Universities in China:Take “Technological” and “Teachers’ Education” Universities as a Case Study

Abstract:

Name translation of colleges and universities can be put into the category of terminology translation, which shall follow the principles of transparency, consistency and accuracy. However, English translations of colleges and universities in China’s mainland are not generally standardized, consistent and accurate, and currently mistakes even occur in an endless stream. Therefore, how to standardize and unify their name translation becomes a pressing issue. The author collected Chinese names and the corresponding English name translation of 1225 colleges and universities via visiting the official websites, figured out the naming rules and translating methods of colleges and universities in China through quantitative statistics and qualitative analysis, and tried to give the appropriate translations of “Technological” and “Teachers’ Education” colleges and universities by taking them as an example.
