Abstract:

The history of oxygen’s discovery and nomenclature stands as a landmark event in the history of science.The evolutionary journey of oxygen’s Chinese nomenclature profoundly demonstrates the exceptional wisdom of Chinese chemists in assimilating Western scientific concepts.By skillfully leveraging the unique advantages of Chinese ideographic system,they creatively transformed the concept of “oxygen” to naturally integrate it into traditional Chinese linguistic context while precisely conveying modern chemical connotations.This ultimately achieved harmonious unification of traditional cognitive paradigms with modern scientific discourse.Through diachronic analysis of the creation,controversy,and standardization of oxygen’s Chinese nomenclature,this paper aims to unveil the intricate interplay of language,culture,and disciplinary norms in scientific language construction,as well as the bidirectional dynamics between the “dissemination of Western learning” and the “adaptation of Chinese traditions”.
