Abstract:

This paper investigates in depth the phenomenon of sokuon (gemination) in Japanese numeral-classifier combinations,analyzing its phonological rules and influencing factors.Based on the NHK Japanese Pronunciation and Accent New Dictionary (2016),the study focuses on classifiers beginning with voiceless initial consonants and examines the rules of sokuon insertion when combined with the numerals “1,6,8,and 10.” The research finds that sokuon is jointly influenced by the phonetic features of classifiers,their etymology,as well as the character count and mora count (phonological units) of corresponding Chinese classifiers.Through systematic analysis,this paper refines the rules of sokuon in numeral-classifier combinations and provides new insights for research in Japanese phonology.
