Abstract:

Culture-loaded idioms in Cantonese serve as vital carriers of regional identity，embodying the linguistic，historical，and sociocultural dimensions of the Cantonese-speaking community.Due to their deep cultural embeddedness and linguistic specificity，these idioms present considerable challenges in translation，particularly in cross-cultural contexts where cultural assumptions and communicative norms differ.Grounded in an intercultural communication framework，this paper examines the typology of culture-loaded idioms in Cantonese，identifies the key difficulties involved in their English translation，and evaluates a range of translation strategies with reference to their functional applicability and effectiveness.The analysis reveals that context-sensitive and culturally-informed translation strategies can significantly enhance the intercultural intelligibility and acceptability of such idioms in English.This research not only provides theoretical insights into the translation of culturally-specific language，but also offers practical guidance for translators seeking to balance fidelity to source culture with the comprehensibility for target audiences.Based on this research，the paper aims to provide theoretical basis and practical guidance for the translation of culture-loaded words in Cantonese，and to the broader endeavor of promoting the international visibility and appreciation of Cantonese culture.
