PEI Yajun
2023, 25 1): 3-9.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.01.001

The construction of the terminology discipline in China is very important for building the new concepts, new categories and new expressions that can reflect the great practice and theoretical innovation of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The construction of terminology discipline in China has a good historical foundation, but the discipline development is still at a low level, and the discipline influence needs to be improved. We should base on our own land, look at the world and focus on connectivity to promote the terminology system construction of discipline, academic and discourse, and promote the maturity of Chinese terminology as soon as possible.

2023, 25 1): 10-19.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.01.002

Terminology is a mirror reflecting the evolution of human thoughts. The development of scientific thought in China is characterized by stages, from ancient science to modern science, and the terminology of each stage is different. Chinese unique scientific and technological ideas are highlighted through the study of ancient Chinese terminologies, which is of great significance to the creation of contemporary Chinese terminologies and the theoretical study of Chinese terminologies. This paper discusses the nature and characteristics of term of Chinese source from four aspects: the type of ancient Chinese scientific knowledge and thoughts, Chinese professional vocabulary, the determination of term of Chinese source, and the characteristics of term of Chinese source. The study of term of Chinese source should be conducted in the context of Chinese traditional culture.

Thoughts on Practice of Translating Terms in Modern China from the Perspective of Semiotics
LI Xiaoli, WEI Xiangqing
2023, 25 1): 20-26.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.01.003

In the process of the integration and exchange of Chinese and Western cultures, a large amount of foreign words have been introduced into Chinese, which have undergone the process of renaming, dissemination, mutation, solidification or disappearance in Chinese when transplanting from Western to Chinese exotic soil. While naming an object in a source language is done directly, renaming it in a second language is nevertheless indirect, which inevitably is affected by multiple factors such as semantics, context, and culture. Essentially, the translation involves the conversion and meaning practice between two symbology sets. This paper adopts the relevant theories of semiotics and, through the research methods of literature perusal and speculation, specifically analyzes the process of transliteration of Western foreign terms in the practice of interlingual symbol, that is, symbol generation, symbolization process, and legal identity in Chinese. We also try to depict the terms’ motion trajectory model to provide a new perspective for the contemporary interpretation of modern Chinese term translation practice and provide new ideas for the unification and standardization of foreign term translation.

On Qian Xuesen’s “Chinese Flavor” in Terminology Translation
LI Xuan, LU Huaguo
2023, 25 1): 36-42.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.01.005

The key to the construction of China Terminology is the prominence of Chinese characteristics in the study and practice of terminology in China. “Chinese flavor”, which Qian Xuesen adhered to as a basic concept in his terminology translation practice, not only epitomizes his main thought on terminology translation but also has important implications for the construction of China Terminology. However, previous studies failed to specify the content of “Chinese flavor”. This paper explores the “Chinese flavor” as revealed in Qian’s Chinese translations of some English terms, and examines the possible restrictions on its application from three aspects: form, sound and meaning. Purpose of this research is to elaborate on the “Chinese flavor” and enrich terminology translation theories and, by extension, construct China Terminology in the future.

YANG Yanxia, PAN Xingyao, WANG Runqiu, ZHANG Ying
2023, 25 1): 49-56.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.01.007

Traditional Chinese cultural terms symbolize Chinese ideas and culture, whereas the unique features of cultural terms, such as its historicity, abstraction and contextuality, have posed challenges for cultural terms translation. The development of digital media has been providing multiple channels for the dissemination of cultural terms. Notably, we have to recognize that it is the complexity of the multimedia that imposes difficulties for cultural term translation. Based on the multimodal translation theory and focused on the English translation strategies of traditional Chinese cultural terms in the digital media, we collected and sorted out the English translation of Chinese cultural terms in the authoritative digital media and summarized the translation strategies of cultural terms in multimodal context. We hope our results can shed some light on the English translation practice of Chinese ideas and culture in the digital media era.

On the Semantic “Untranslatability” of Terms: Case Study on French-Chinese Translation of Descriptive Fragrance Terms
ZHANG Lili
2023, 25 1): 57-63.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.01.008

Descriptive terms account for a large proportion of all fragrance terms, but there is great uncertainty in the semantic translation of descriptive fragrance terms. By comparing synonymous terms in a monolingual context and equivalent terms in a bilingual context, this paper summarizes the three types of semantic correspondence in the translation of French-Chinese descriptive fragrance terms, and demonstrates the existence of semantic untranslatability of terms in the translation process. The fact of “untranslatability” is further analyzed from the perspective of cultural linguistics, conceptualization of objects and standardization of terms. Understanding the untranslatability of term semantics and the reasons for untranslatability can help translators solve the problem of semantic translation in a targeted manner, thereby ensuring the accuracy and standardization of term translation.

FENG Haoda, ZENG Gang, WANG Qikai
2023, 25 1): 64-73.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.01.009

Researching maritime archeology terminology is an interdisciplinary area which “marries” maritime archeology and linguistics studies. The construction of a maritime archeology terminology system plays an integral part in developing the discipline, improving the construction of “three systems” of the discipline, and gaining more freedom of speech in the international academia. With the corpus-driven approach, we demonstrate the feasibility and necessity of compiling Maritime Archeology Terminology Dictionary, from the aspects of rationale, general framework, as well as the technique required for terminology mining and management. With possibly large language datasets pertaining to maritime archeology, we hope the intended dictionary can help with describing, comparing, summarizing, categorizing, analyzing, and interpreting the concepts of maritime archeology via bibliometric analyses. Our results indicate that such a dictionary can also help break through the constraints of disciplinary barriers, addressing academic issues in common and building up a “disciplinary group”, an academic community of shared future, as well as a scientific, systematic and theorized maritime archeology system with Chinese characteristics in the new era.

Inheritance and Development of Language and Culture:From the Perspective of Key Terms in Thought and Culture
HAN Zhen
2023, 25 2): 3-7.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.001

Written language is the main carrier and driving force for human beings to progress from ignorance to enlightenment. Its power lies in representing both external things and internal subjective intentions, as well as relationships between things and between people and things, through a series of “key terms” or concepts. Such terms can express things, allow people to reflect the law of things through thinking, express their intentions and so they can communicate with each other. Written language has enabled people to acquire an intermediary capability beyond time and space, resulting in the historical continuity and innovative development of their exchange and communication. Therefore, the transition and creation of the connotations of key terms reflect the changes in human civilization, and the process of our inheriting and developing key terms in thought and culture is also the process of inheriting and developing human civilization.

Terminological Cognitive Discourse Analysis
PENG Yi, ZHANG Xueying, ZENG Fangyuan
2023, 25 2): 8-18.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.002

With the development of discourse analysis, a variety of research approaches have been proposed, each with its own characteristics and advantages. However, in terms of analytical theories and methods related to language, most of them are limited to Systemic Functional Linguistics, neglecting the attention to and reference to discourses in specialized fields, as well as the exploration of the understanding and use of terms in ordinary discourses, along with the ideology behind the terms. Based on Terminology, Cognitive Linguistics, and Systemic Functional Linguistics, we put forward the theory of Terminological Cognitive Discourse Analysis (TCDA), identifying terms in light of specialized and ordinary discourses, analyzing semantic and grammatical parts of terms, and then combining contexts, semantic and grammatical contents of terms, together with the assistance of other methods of discourse analysis, to reveal the ideology and attitude underlying terms. Subsequently, the TCDA theory is applied to illustrating Chinese ecological environmental discourses, which demonstrates the applicability and developmental potential of such a theory.

LI Zonghao
2023, 25 2): 27-31.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.004

The concept of modern first aid originated in the European battlefield in the 19th century, and the public practice of first aid began from then on. The World Emergency and Disaster Medicine Club was founded in Meinz, Germany, in 1976, and later was renamed as the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM). Since then, emergency medicine and disaster medicine have been formally appeared as professional disciplines, and closely linked together, which formed a new concept of modern emergency medicine. The WADEM has also started to engage in activities as a professional academic institution of emergency medicine. In 1979, emergency medicine, as a new frontier discipline, was internationally recognized as the 23rd discipline of medicine, and pre-hospital emergency was one of its branches. China is one of the early countries to enter this field. In the process of introducing the important practice of emergency medicine, the important scientific terms of modern Chinese emergency medicine was put forward and emergency medicine was defined. At present, key terms together with the terminology system of emergency medicine has initially formed conforming to the trend of the times.

Fundamental Layers and Designing Principles of Language-Knowledge Service System for Translational Purposes
NING Hailin
2023, 25 2): 44-50.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.006

The language-knowledge service system for translational purposes is an organic integration of parallel corpora, term banks and ontological knowledge bases. The system is designed towards the achievement of two major functions, through which both wanted knowledge and coordinated innovation in the entire translational ecosystem are accessible: (1) the objective, intuitive and processive resource description aiming at knowledge discovery and construction; (2) visualization of the organized data aiming at the enhancement of cognitive capacity and working efficiency. As a product of collaboration, standardization and visualization, the system structures its kernel section with three layers, named the elementary, the analytical, and the applied layer. The elementary layer firstly delivers basic language resources to the analytical layer, then the processed resources and relative results are transported to the applied layer for visualized representation, thus an interactive system of module connecting and knowledge recycling is composed accordingly.

Terminological Shift in Academic Translation: Descriptive Study Based on Processing Manuscripts
ZHENG Jianwei
2023, 25 2): 51-55.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.007

Terminology is an important representation of the professionalism of academic discourses. The faithful reproduction of the source text’s terminology has remained focal in terminology translation studies, which seldom addressed the shift of terminology, flexible translation of the source text’s terminologies. Based on the processing manuscripts of three books from Collected Translations of Belt and Road Studies, this paper described the translators’ terminological shift. It’s found that terminological shifts includes terminological attenuation and intensification; terminological attenuation is realized by paraphrasing and commonization, while terminological attenuation by condensing, creation, and borrowing; the former’s larger number than the latter justifies the hypothesis of explication; and a comparative analysis of the translator’s translation manuscript with the editor’s proofreading manuscript indicates that the editors didn’t impose any substantive interference with the translators’ terminological attenuation or terminological intensification, which reveals the initiative of the translators’ terminology translation.

Li Shanlan's Outlook on the Translation of Scientific Terminology
LI Changbao
2023, 25 2): 72-77.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.010

Li Shanlan is a well-known mathematician, astronomer, physicist, botanist, educator as well as translator in the late Qing Dynasty of China. As an outstanding translator, he had 8 great translation works published in his lifetime, totaling 104 volumes and covering many important fields of modern western sciences—mathematics, astronomy, mechanics and botany. His erudite knowledge, profound research, and far-sighted vista mark the translator somebody in the Chinese history. Having fully understood the western scientific concepts and carefully examined the implications of the traditional Chinese scientific terms,Li Shanlan established a western translation terminology system by “inheriting the old terms so as to promote the Chinese tradition”,“following the existing terms so as to be consistent”,“borrowing the old things so as to broaden their use”,and “adopting new terms so as to introduce new things”,thus making great contributions to the standardization of modern Chinese scientific terminology translation and the modernization of the Chinese science.

Discussion on Appropriate English Versions of Chinese Medicine Terms Based on “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance”—The Case of “Tanyin” MA Liangyu, LIU Jianghua
2023, 25 2): 85-90.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.012

English versions of Chinese medicine terms should be standardized for Chinese medicine culture’s better transmission, into which scholars such as LI Zhaoguo and ZHU Jianping have put efforts. However, some translators still use words at will in English medicine translation. As a result, some Chinese medicine terms have improper English versions as “Hundred Flowers”, which is not helpful for the standardization in a way. By using literature analysis, we describe the connotation of the translation principle “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance”, and take this principle as the criteria for evaluating English versions of terminology based on related articles. Taking “tanyin”“tan”“yin” as examples and analyzing their English versions to find out corresponding versions, we summarized the pattern for selecting appropriate English versions of Chinese medicine terms.

Definition of Oligosaccharide Needs to be Unified
XU Chunying
2023, 25 2): 91-96.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.02.013

Terms and their definitions are the cornerstone of knowledge system. If the definitions of one term are not unified, the knowledge system thus constructed will be unstable and people cannot communicate accurately accordingly. Oligosaccharide is a basic term in the knowledge system of carbohydrate chemistry, and will directly affect all researches and applications based on it. However, oligosaccharide is defined differently in various books, which brings inconvenience to the expression and application of the term. In this paper, the definition of oligosaccharide and classification of carbohydrate are discussed by comparing the concept in different terminology dictionaries and chemical books. It is suggested that the definition of oligosaccharide should be unified and should be separated from disaccharide, which is very important for the basic research and the development of oligosaccharide industry, as well as the international academic communication and the development of international markets related.

CHEN Haixia, LIANG Hong
2023, 25 3): 3-10.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.03.001

Cognitive sociolinguistics combines the study of meaning by cognitive models with the study of usage-based language models, by which new research spaces and methods have been obtained for language variation study. Terminological variation may occur due to different situations of scientific communication and different groups of users. This paper analyzes the social and cognitive factors in terminological variation, such as term naming variation, industry-specific terminology variation, and the variation with emotional participation from the perspective of cognitive sociolinguistics. Our research shows that terminology will vary influenced by cognitive experiences, social environments, and emotional participation. We find that cognitive sociolinguistics study on terminological variation can clarify the process and origin of variation more clearly.

Conceptual Integration on Generalization of Scientific Terms from Three Plane Perspectives
LI Xianghua
2023, 25 3): 11-17.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.03.002

The traditional study on the generalization of scientific terms mainly focuses on the semantic perspective, which it is difficult to explain the increment of the term pragmatic function and the change of the syntactic nature after the generalization. In fact, pragmatic and syntax are also important factors in the generalization of terms. The combined effect of semantic, pragmatic and syntax can be regarded as a process of mental integration. The improvement of Gilles Fauconnier & Mark Turner conceptual integration framework can accommodate pragmatic and syntactic factors, and further upgrade the integration process of blending space to a hierarchical structure, so as to build a multi-dimensional comprehensive mental integration model to explain the multidimensional motivation, process and pragmatic efficiency of scientific term generalization from the cognitive perspective.

Taking the Chinese Languistic Terms as data source and using the Neo4j graph database, we adopt a top-down graph construction model, and integrate event theory and event evolutionary graph construction methods to generate linguistic terminology knowledge graphs. We hope to visualize the five types of attribute values within linguistic terms and nine types of relationships among term nodes, and provide a more reasonable disciplinary knowledge graph construction model. We also analyze some features of the linguistic terminology knowledge graph, and summarize and outlook the research on linguistic terminology knowledge graph.

C-E Translation of Abbreviation Terms in Political Discourse from the Perspective of Cognition
YANG Qian
2023, 25 3): 27-32.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.03.004

There has always been a dispute between form and meaning in the C-E translation of “abbreviations in political discourse”. The view of “reader orientation” holds that the primary task of translation is to convey meaning, and shortened forms are difficult to be understood by foreign readers. However, the view of “original orientation” holds that the abbreviated form has the function of suggestive meaning and associative memory, which highlights the characteristics of Chinese political discourse and cultural confidence. This study attempts to provide a new explanation of the debate between the two orientations from a cognitive perspective by categorizing more than 500 abbreviations used in Beijing Municipal Government Work Reports form 2013 to 2022. We found that the translation methods of abbreviation terms are determined by the cognitive way of abbreviation generation, and put forward corresponding countermeasures to improve the quality of abbreviation translation to help the translation of characteristic expressions in Chinese political discourse.

LIU Jinting, WEI Qin, DAI Xiaoming
2023, 25 3): 33-43.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.03.005

This paper made a comprehensive analysis on the cross-strait scientific terms included in Cross-strait Chinese Terms in Atmospheric Science (3rd Edition), which would help promote the work of cross-strait scientific terms comparison and unification. We classified the related terms into three categories: completely consistent terms, incompletely consistent terms and completely inconsistent terms. For inconsistent terms, we mainly conducted a detailed study from the aspects of mathematical statistics, word frequency statistics, word frequency statistics and visual analysis, so as to fully understood the differences between terms across the Taiwan Strait. Our results show that the consistency rate of atmospheric science terms across the Taiwan Strait is high as to 72.92%, and the inconsistency rate is 27.08%. There is a high degree of consistency in the use of words and expressions of scientific terms across the Taiwan Strait. The differences are mainly reflected in the different understanding of the meaning of words, or the problem of usage habits.

Standardization and Diversity of TCM Term Translation in International Context
GAO Yun
2023, 25 3): 53-58.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.03.007

In order to understand the tendency of standardization and diversification of TCM term translation more clearly, this study analyzes the influence and restraints of international context on TCM term translation from two aspects of social background and situational context. Based on the analysis of the dominance, complexity and difference of TCM term translation standards, we think that the concept of “diversity” is the compensation for the core concept of “standardization”, which helps to improve the rationality and standardization of TCM term translation. Based on three types of texts (TCM classics, works and textbooks) and TCM teaching practice, we also explored the varying degree of difference in the terminology translation standard under these communication contexts.

Study on Status Quo of English Translation of Acupoints in Traditional Chinese Medicine
HUANG Guanghui, YUE Feng, SONG Feng, YU Chuanxing
2023, 25 3): 59-65.   DOI: 10.12339/j.issn.1673-8578.2023.03.008

To promote the unification of English translation of the acupoints, the necessity of English translation of acupoints was analyzed based on the strategy of Chinese culture’s going abroad, and a comparative study on the five Chinese and foreign translation versions of acupoints was conducted on the basis of the survey on the status quo of English translation of acupoints in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is found that the main translation strategies, including literal translation with transliteration and liberal translation as supplements, have the highest unity among the five versions. However, the translation versions of acupoints are not united enough. In the selection of multiple versions, it is advisable to select the version preserving the medical significance or traditional cultural images. It is proposed that in the new era, we should attach importance to the unification of English translation of the acupoints to promote Chinese traditional culture’s going abroad during the acupuncture’s going global.

Wuqinxi is a treasure of traditional Chinese culture and contains abundant Chinese national spirits, and Wuqinxi terms possess strong ethnic characteristics and traditional vibes. This paper investigates the Spanish translation methods of Wuqinxi terms by using the self-built parallel corpus. We found that the translators, to a large extent, appropriately convey the technical and cultural connotations of Wuqinxi terms through a combination of transliteration, free translation, literal translation, annotation and other translation methods. However, some term translations still exist translation issues such as mistranslation, multiple translations, and omission. We think Translators should formulate universal terminology translation principles and strengthen the awareness of terminology standardization. On the basis of full examination of term origins and accurate understanding of term concepts, translators should flexibly adopt translation methods so as to improve the accuracy of Wuqinxi term translation and promote the international dissemination.

The construction of lexical semantic knowledge base is a basic task in natural language processing and plays an important role in various subtasks of natural language processing. This paper proposes an automatic generation method of term concept KDML representation for compound terms. The method is based on the hierarchical structure of concepts, uses distributed representation method to represent concepts and term definition text, and performs concept disambiguation according to the semantic distance between concepts and terms definition text. The method can learn the semantic roles between concepts through K-nearest neighbor algorithm, and generates term concept representation according to KDML syntax rules. Our experimental results showed that the accuracy rate of the first sememe was 96%, and the F1 values of the total sememe, semantic role and total triple were 91.92%, 78.9% and 73.41% respectively.

The widespread use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the digital age has exerted influence on human cognitive changes in the digital age and realized the multi-modal information knowledge transmission by digital media. The historical construction of language resources and technologies infrastructure serving for the information and knowledge media in the digital age has emerged. Terminological knowledge bases are intellectualized tools for the translation practice as well as a constituent of the language infrastructure in the digital age, while playing the role of digital communication media. They integrate and systemize for better benefits of terminological knowledge resources in specific subjects or fields, supporting multilingual cross-cultural communication in the digital era with multilingual knowledge expressions, and catering for the digital cognitive mode with multimodal representation of digital data. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics and functions of terminological knowledge bases, their communication environments and social applications. We also explicate the significance of the multilingual development of terminological knowledge bases and the realization of multimodal data representation.

In recent years, the construction of terminology database is in full swing and has become a hot spot. In the past, the construction of terminology database was mostly confined to the single mode of text terminology pairs, so there were some limitations in interpretation, which brought new challenges and requirements to the development and construction of terminology database in the new era in China. In view of the multimodal nature of architectural terminology, we attempt to discuss the construction rationale of multimodal terminology database, map the multimodal presentation of architectural terminology from the perspective of visual grammar theory from three aspects including representation meaning, interaction meaning and composition meaning, and introduces the specific development and processing path of multimodal architectural terminology database, and explore the application research. We hope to provide new ideas and methods for the construction and application research of architectural terminology database with Chinese characteristics.

Big data research is an emerging field of research in the fourth technological revolution. Big data encyclopedia entries have the characteristics of categorization: Proper noun class entries may be labeled as level 1. Composite component class entries can be labeled as level 2. Other classes can be labeled as level 3. The translation of entries at different levels can be developed in different modes. Our systematic working philosophy and translation methodology are summarized in our practice of multilingual translation of big data encyclopedia entries in the working languages of the United Nations, i.e. taking the Termonline as the standard; focusing both on Chinese and English as the two wings; taking the terminology prescription as the mainstay, and paying attention to the characteristics of language description. Termonline is the translation anchor of the authoritative knowledge base. Multilingual translation should be based on Chinese-English and English-Chinese translation. The translation of encyclopedia entries should conform to both the language standards and technical terms standards. The descriptive characteristics of language needs attention beyond the prescription. We think the multilingual translation of big data encyclopedia entries can further promote the development of terminology examination and approving, dictionary compilation and overseas dissemination all over the world.

Under the background of the rapid development of science and technology, the standardization of scientific and technical terms is facing increasingly stringent challenges. In recent years, significant breakthroughs have been achieved with the advent of a new generation of artificial intelligence technologies, particularly since the introduction of ChatGPT. Its exceptional performance in language comprehension and content generation has opened up new possibilities for the standardization of scientific and technical terms. Although ChatGPT and its core technologies have not yet been widely adopted in the practice of standardizing scientific and technical terms in our country, the opportunities and challenges they present are worth further study. This paper aims to thoroughly investigate the potential applications and possible challenges of these technologies in the standardization of scientific and technical terms. We hope to provide valuable insights for the development of scientific and technical terminology standardization in the era of artificial intelligence.
