摘要: 地名翻译一贯有很大的任意性,也难以统一。 秦代书同文重形轻音,而传统地名中译却相反地采取音译法。联合国根据地名应用的需要,通过采用重形轻音的地名单一罗马书同文译法。 文章讨论地名字母化在计算机输入、排序方面的好处。 建议中文地名采用拼音排序办法,在应用时采用首字母地名输入法。 在罗马字获得归化中文后,更可望减少另配汉字地名钥匙的需要。

Abstract: The Chinese translation of geographic names has been arbitrary and confusing. The Qin Dynasty's unification of writing was based on script while traditional translation of geographic names has been based on speech. According to the need in usage, United Nations standardized the Romanization of geographical names on the basis of provided script rather than speech. The author discussed the benefits of using Pinyin as well as Pinyin initials in the inputting and indexing of Chinese geographic names. With the naturalization of the Roman alphabet in the Chinese writing system, one can expect the reduced need of using Chinese characters in the creation of new geographic information keys.
